<p>Take an unwanted book, recycle and transform it into something expressive and new, using it as a base to build upon. Altered books feature cut-outs, stencils, collages and assemblages based on a theme or concept. Pages can be as personal or playful as the artist desires.</p>

<h3>Art Therapy</h3>

<p>Artmaking is a great opportunity for self-exploration. Through a variety of media and creative techniques, this class will provide a playful arena for loosening up some creative energy together as a group.</p>

<h3>Comic Book Storytelling</h3>

<p>Are you a fan of comic books, manga, the funnies or graphic novels? Students will examine the elements that make up a comic book: pictures in sequence, captions, dialog, visual symbols, narrative technique, style. All drawing abilities are welcome.</p>

<h3>Drawing Fundamentals</h3>

<p>This class provides beginner students with a solid foundation in drawing. Students will gain a better understanding of the principles of drawing by developing the ability to see as artists. The class works with a variety of subjects including still life, figure and landscape. </p>

<h3>Figure Drawing I</h3>

<p>This class is for students with little or no experience in figure drawing. This course emphasizes traditional, academic drawing with a live model.</p>

<h3>Introduction to Watercolor</h3>

<p>In this class students will be exploring the basics in watercolor painting: the different techniques used in pigment application, the handling of brushes and the use of washes and lifting.</p>

<p>This is an advanced level studio course focusing on college<br />

<p>A workout for your hands, eyes and heart for juniors or seniors aspiring to head off to art school. Using one-on-one and group critiques, each student will create an individual portfolio of work that will showcase a wide vocabulary of artistic techniques.</p>

<p>This class will explore the topic of portrait from several angles: painting, pencil, collage, realistic and expressive portraiture, mask making.</p>

<h3>Printmaking I</h3>
<h4><a href="#carlisle">Molly Carlisle</a></h4>
<p class="level">(Level: High School &amp; Adult)</p>
<p>Students will explore in depth various methods of printmaking (wood block, linoleum block and monotype printing) and, choosing a method, create a limited edition that will be presented at the end of the session.</p>

<h3>Storybook Creation</h3>
<h4><a href="#branson">Bonnie Branson</a></h4>
<p class="level">(Level: Middle School)</p>
<p>Humans have been telling stories since the beginning of time. In this class we will explore visual storytelling by creating handmade journals, 3-D popup books, illustrated books and storyboards. All that is required is to keep a bit of imagination!</p>

<h3>Bonnie Branson</h3>
<p>Bonnie is enrolled in the Teacher Preparation Program at MassArt. She received her BFA in Animation and Illustration at the School of Visual Arts in NYC. Besides being a student and a teacher, Bonnie is also a freelance illustrator. Her first children&#8217;s book, &#8220;Michael and Marie&#8221;, was published in 2003.</p>

<h3>Molly Carlisle</h3>
<p>Molly is a recent graduate of Mount Holyoke College where she received her BA in Studio Art. Printmaking was revealed to her while studying abroad for a year in Florence, Italy and now she&#8217;s hooked! For the past two summers Molly taught printmaking at the Deerfield Academy Summer Arts Camp.</p>

<h3>Katrina Carye</h3>
<p>Katrina is a licensed mental health counselor and board-certified, registered art therapist with an MA from Lesley University and MRCP from Harvard Grad School of Design. She founded the Hartje Gallery in 1982 in Berlin and now here as a combination exhibition and studio space in 2006. She will continue to see individual art therapy clients here as well as lead therapeutic art groups. Katrina is also a printmaker.</p>

<h3>Sarah Manger</h3>
<p>Sarah is currently in the MA Education program at BU and has her B.F.A. with a dual major in Printmaking &amp; Painting from Frostburg State University. She is a licensed K-12 Art Teacher in the state of MA and brings over eight years of art teaching experience to the Hartje Gallery.</p>

<h3>Eka Maraneli</h3>
<p>Born in the Republic of Georgia, Eka earned graduate degrees from the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts, where she later worked as an assistant professor. Since coming to the US in 1993, Eka has taught at Virginia Commonwealth University from 1996-2004 and now at BU. Eka&#8217;s work has been exhibited and is held in private collections in the US and Europe. She designed and illustrated several books. Eka lives with her husband and two children in Brookline.</p>

<h3>Jack Turnbull</h3>
<p>Jack is an accomplished cartoonist, illustrator and artist. He graduated from Rhode Island School of Design in 2007 and was awarded a one-year stay in Rome on the European Honors Program. In 2001 his comic &#8220;The Girl from Outer Space&#8221; was voted by Clamour magazine as one of the year&#8217;s best comics in the small press.
